A Season in Blue Quilt Along - "Supernova" Month 9

Welcome to "A Season in Blue" Quilt Along -

This month, we will be working on our final block for our sampler quilt.

We have had SEW much fun making individual blocks

from a selection of quilts found in our "A Season in Blue" book.

This has given you a chance to try some of the beautiful patterns

and grow as a quilter, as we created a Block Sampler.

Our month 9 block will be from

the "Supernova" quilt on page 130 of our "A Season in Blue" book.

Please note: Fabrics in step-by-step photos and videos may vary from my blocks.

These will be provided to demonstrate the technique, and how to make your blocks

through the step-by-step photos and videos.

I will share with you the fabrics I will be using for this block, but

I encourage you to get creative this year and choose fabrics that you love!

Supernova Block

Let's get started!

Gather your supplies and follow the cutting directions on page 131 of the "A Season in Blue" book.

I recommend 1 light blue, 1 medium blue, 2 dark blues, and 4 light fabrics.

Did you notice our Blue Escape and Seabreeze Collections? These are perfect for this project!

I am going to be using Aurilfil 2325 for piecing,

a Sewline Pencil for marking, and lots of Patchwork pins for pinning.

For our Block Sampler, we will be making 1 of these blocks.

Remember, read through this entire blog before you start cutting.

For one Supernova Block , you will need the following:

Outer Star Points

Cutting: 24 - piece C (light blue fabric)

32 - piece D (light fabric)

4 - piece E (dark blue fabric

4 - piece F (light fabric)

4 - piece B (light fabric)

Eight Point Star

Cutting: 4 - piece G (medium blue fabric)

4 - piece H (light fabric)

4 - piece I (dark blue fabric)

4 - piece J (dark blue fabric)

Assemble a light blue C triangle and a light D triangle.

Join to make a half-square triangle (HST).

Trim dog ears. Press seam allowances towards light blue.

Repeat to make 24 total HSTs.

Sew three HST's into units.

Add a light triangle D to each unit as shown. Press seams towards dark fabrics.

Repeat to make 4 each of Unit 1 and Unit 2 as shown above.

Sew a dark blue diamond E to the end of Unit 1.

Sew a light F piece to Unit 2 as shown.

Sew units together as shown above.

Press seams.

Repeat all steps to make four total Outer Star Points and set aside.

Now we are going to move make one Eight Point Star for a center of our Supernova block.

For basic Eight Point Star directions, I recommend watching our video below to refresh for step-by-step.

EIGHT POINT STAR

Select: 4 - piece G (medium blue fabric)

4 - piece H (light fabric)

4 - piece I (dark blue fabric)

4 - piece J (dark blue fabric)

Pin and sew 1 medium blue diamond and 1 light diamond together.

Make 4 sets total. Press seams in one direction.

Sew those diamond pairs together to make two half stars.

Trim dog-ears. Press seams in one direction.

Sew two half stars together to make a full star. Press seams.

From the wrong side, remove a couple of stitches to open the center seam allowance to allow it to lie flat.

Use "Y" seams to set-in the dark blue J triangles first, then set-in the dark blue I corner squares.

Press seam allowances toward the star. Trim the Eight Point Star Unit to 6¾" x 6¾" if necessary.

BLOCK ASSEMBLY

Select: 4 - piece B (light fabric)

1 - Eight Point Star

4 - Outer Star Points

Sew one Outer Star Point to an Eight Point Star Unit.

Mark dots ¼" from edges to indicate beginning and stopping points for stitching.

Lock the stitch as you start and stop. As you sew the pieces together, keep the Outer Star Point piece on the bottom (against machine bed) and the star on top (against presser foot). Join pieces, sewing slowly.

In the same manner, sew a second Outer Star Point on the opposite side of the Eight Point Star Unit.

Sew remaining two Outer Star Point pieces into place. Press.

Using "Y" seams to set-in 4 B light pieces to complete the block.

Unfinished Block size is 15½" x 15½"

Continue around the block to finish.

This month, we chose beautiful blocks from our Sky and Sea Quilt, for our quilt sampler.

I'll share with you the fabrics I'm using for each block, but I'm also looking forward to seeing your selection and I encourage you to get creative this year and choose fabrics that you love!

BLOCK 8

I love my original block from the Sky and Sea quilt, but for this event I decided

to use a variety of fabrics for some contrast!

Gather your supplies and follow the cutting directions on page 118 of the "A Season in Blue" book.

Please notice I'm cutting my HST's from two different shades of blues.

I recommend 7 light blues, 7 dark blues, and 7 light fabrics.

Did you notice our Blue Escape and Seabreeze Collections? These are perfect for this project!

I am going to be using Aurilfil 2325 for piecing, lots of Patchwork pins for pinning,

a sharp Olfa rotatory with fresh blades, and one of my favorite (and most versatile) rulers.

For our Block Sampler, we will be making 7 of these blocks.

Get creative with those color choices! Remember, read through this entire blog before you start cutting.

For one Sky and Sea Block , you will need the following:

Cutting: 1 - 4½" square ( light blue fabric)

1 - 4½" square (light fabric)

4 half-square triangles cut from 2 squares - 2 7/8" (light blue fabric)

4 - half-square triangles cut from 2 squares - 2 7/8" (dark blue fabric)

8 - half-square triangles cut from 4 squares - 2 7/8" (light fabric)

For our Block Sampler, we will be making 7 total Sky and Sea Blocks- I can't wait to sew them with you!

Arrange 4 light blue triangles with 4 light triangles to make 4 HST units.

Arrange 4 dark blue triangles with 4 light triangles to make 4 HST units.

Pin and sew 1 blue HST and 1 light HST using 1/4" seam allowance.

Press your triangles open towards the dark and trim dog-ears.

Repeat steps to make 4 blue/light fabric HST units and 4 dark blue/light HST units.

Using the above image as a guide, arrange blue/light fabric HST units

and dark blue/light HST units with one light 4½" square and one light blue 4½" square.

** Please notice the difference in HST unit rotations **

Sew HST's together.

Pin, sew, and press.

The block should be 8½" x 8½" unfinished.

Repeat to make 6 more Sky and Sea blocks for a total of 7.

A Season in Blue Quilt Along - "Something Blue" Month 7

Welcome to "A Season in Blue" Quilt Along -

This month, we will be working on blocks from the Something Blue Quilt.

Each month we are making individual blocks

from a selection of quilts found in our "A Season in Blue" book.

This will give you a chance to try some of the beautiful patterns

and grow as a quilter, as we create a Block Sampler.

Our month 7 block will be from

the “Something Blue” quilt on page 59 of our "A Season in Blue" book.

These will be provided to demonstrate the technique, and how to make your blocks

BLOCK

We will be making blocks from "Something Blue" in a variety of fabrics!

Gather your supplies and follow the cutting directions on page 60 of the "A Season in Blue" book.

I recommend 6 light blue fabrics, 6 dark blue fabrics, and 3 center light fabric.

Did you notice our Blue Escape and Seabreeze Collections? These are perfect for this project!

I am going to be using Aurilfil 2325 for piecing,

a Sewline Pencil for marking, and lots of Patchwork pins for pinning.

For our Block Sampler, we will be making 3 of these blocks.

Get creative with those color choices!

Remember, read through this entire blog before you start cutting.

Cutting for 1 Block: 4 - 4⅞" squares (dark blue fabric)

4 - 4⅞" squares (light blue fabric)

4 - 4½" squares (light blue fabric)

1 - 8½" x 8½" square for star center (light fabric)

Cutting for Block Sashing: 8 - 4½" squares (light blue fabric)

For our Block Sampler, we will be making 3 total Something Blue Blocks-

I can't wait to sew them with you!

STAR BLOCK ASSEMBLY

Arrange together 4 - 4⅞" light blue squares and 4 - 4⅞" dark blue squares.

Place one 4⅞" light blue square on top of one 4⅞" dark blue square, right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line across the light blue square. Sew ¼" from each side of the drawn line.

Cut on the marked diagonal line to make two half-square triangles.

Press seams towards dark blue and light blue.

Trim each triangle square to measure 4½" x 4½".

Repeat to make 8 total half-square triangles.

Arrange together 8 half-square triangles, 4- 4½" light blue squares and 1 - 8½" x 8½" square star center for one block.

Sew in to rows, sew rows together to make a star block. Press.

Repeat all steps to make 3 total Star blocks.

BLOCK SASHING ASSEMBLY

Arrange together 4 - 4½" light blue squares.

Sew together 4 assorted light blue 4½" squares to make a sashing strip.

Repeat to make 2 strips total.

You have now made the Something Blue blocks for your Sampler Quilt.

Here's some color inspiration for you!

You will be sewing all 3 blocks in a row with the sashing added to each side.

The Blue Escape fabrics are the perfect something blue!

The Strawberries and Cream Collection has us dreaming of something sweet!
